You are an adventuring archaeologist, exploring an Egyptian tomb for your latest research project when the ancient stonework above you crumbles. You awake, confused and with a slight headache, to the sight of a small figure made of wood and clay.
He introduces himself as your ushabti. Your sun barque is prepared for you. He gestures to a docked ship floating in the Nile, or at least something that looks like the Nile. Its waters are dark and murky and the river banks look strange. He will be your companion. You see, you have died, and now your soul must journey across the underworld.
The journey will be dangerous, but you're an egyptologist. You have studied “The Book of The Dead,” or “Coming Forth By Day,” and are prepared to fight, enchant, and outwit the guardians of the underworld. You are equipped with spells and amulets for protection and ushabti are your loyal soldiers. You set out to reach the Kingdom of Osiris.
We are excited to announce that the Flop Mongers team is working on a new game: Coming Forth By Day, a roguelike deck builder inspired by Egyptian mythology.
Players will travel across a procedurally-generated underworld, full of mysterious opportunities as well as bloodthirsty monsters and Pharaohs. Players will collect ushabtis with different skills to battle enemies in mini-games inspired by the ancient Egyptian game of senet. Other collectables like spells and amulets will provide active and passive abilities and change the flavor of each game run.
We’ve done a ton of research into The Book of the Dead and Egyptian mythology and are excited with how much inspiration we are able to pull for mechanics, gameplay, and art. We can’t wait to share more! Keep an eye out for our next devlog.
